Saco Music Mission Statement
I can learn a new piece of music on my own!
Hello. and welcome to 5th and 6th grade band! The 5th graders will be starting their instruments this week so don't be alarmed if you hear strange noises coming out of their horns! The 6th graders will continue where they left off at the end of the school year last year.
Grading this year will be based on performance and skill testing rather than timed home practice. Your musicians will still have to practice to succeed in band, but there is no maximum or minimum amount of time, and the more the better!! Practice is a positive thing, so please enjoy their progress!!
My goals for you, the students:
5th grade
- Learn the correct posture, embouchure (shape of your mouth), and technique for your instrument.
- Learn how to read the notes and how to play them on your instrument.
- Complete at least 50% of Standards of Excellence Grade 1 method book.
- Perform a solo at the Middle School Music Festival in February at Malta High School.
- Perform at concerts several times through the school year.
6th grade
- Refine instrument techniques learned in 5th grade so they become ingrained habits.
- Start basic articulation i.e. staccato, marcato, slurs.
- Start advanced articulation i.e. double tonguing, drum set playing etc.
- Perform a solo at the Middle School Music Festival in February at Malta High School.
- Perform at concerts several times through the school year.
I look forward to another great year!
Mr. Pippin
